What's your job about?

IRESS is a technology company specialising in the development of software for financial markets and wealth management. My role involves providing succinct and accurate responses on information security matters for client requests and for new business opportunities. Additionally, I assist the Information Security team with internal security controls reviews and any other ad-hoc information security-related matters.

What's your background?

I grew up in Sydney all my life and have relocated to Melbourne to work in the IRESS head office for my role. Prior to IRESS, I was studying a Bachelor of Information Technology at Macquarie University whilst working part time at Apple as a Genius.

I found this opportunity online and although I wasn’t sure if I had the right skills for the job, I still took the chance and applied. After a missed few calls back and forth with HR, I wasn’t 100% committed to pursuing the opportunity due to the location, however, I found myself travelling in Melbourne a month later and was invited to my first interview! At the time of writing this, I’ve now been in this role for almost 5 months and have loved every moment of it.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, if someone is really interested in the role, in the field, and they enjoy keeping up to date with the latest in information security, then they can definitely do a job like mine. Someone in my role would require some technical background or at least a passion in information technology. Self-learning is very important, and empathy is a must when it comes to client assurance.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I get to work with various teams to get my job done! The tasks I do heavily rely on communicating and collaborating with other teams to achieve an end goal, and so I get to learn about the business inside and out, learn new concepts, and I have the opportunity to meet lots of people.

What are the limitations of your job?

When people think Information Security, they think ‘audit’ or ‘compliance’, which results in the misconception that we are a stringent force governing the company. To most of my workmates my age who are software development grads or helpdesk employees, it’s mostly a running joke between us. However, when I need to approach other teams for an issue, it can be daunting knowing that they don’t want to be approached by the Information Security team.

One other limitation which I’d consider is the global nature of the company and my team. At times, I need to assist with colleagues and clients from other regions which can result in either one day turn around time conversations, or otherwise late night calls to the other regions.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Surround yourself with people who build you up, and in turn, be a presence of goodness in others’ lives.
  • Be patient with yourself when things aren’t going the way you expect. Any hindrance is an experience which will allow you to develop and grow.
  • Strive for passion, excellence, and integrity in all that you do.
