The culture of mentorship at Morgan Stanley is unparalleled, and experienced investment professionals sitting around you will provide constant support and guidance.

What's your job about?

Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing (REI) is the private real estate investment management arm of Morgan Stanley and has been one of the most active property investors globally for over two decades. REI analysts are given responsibilities across every stage of the investment acquisition and management process. These include: preparing financial models and investment committee papers for new opportunities, managing operating partners and property managers to achieve asset management objectives and evaluating exit strategies and expressions of interest from capital providers. Senior investment professionals provide continuous guidance, but analysts are urged to challenge assumptions and think strategically beyond the numbers. REI provides graduates with endless opportunities to grow as an investment professional and learn from leaders of Morgan Stanley and the industry.

What's your background?

I grew up in Sydney and studied at UNSW, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws in 2015. I was a summer intern during my penultimate year with the team here in Sydney, which covers all of Australia and New Zealand. I was fortunate enough to be offered a position with the team at the conclusion of my internship and started as a full-time analyst in February 2016.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Absolutely. My university education was certainly traditional, but any graduate with a critical mind and a keen interest in investing should apply. The culture of mentorship at Morgan Stanley is unparalleled, and experienced investment professionals sitting around you will provide constant support and guidance. New analysts will participate in a formal 3-week training program in New York, which covers required knowledge in accounting fundamentals, financial mathematics, and financial statement analysis.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Asset tours, e.g. 7 hours in a very old minibus driving around Sydney with the team, our regional boss, and a capital partner – great fun.

What are the limitations of your job?

Working long hours can at times quite demanding physically and mentally. This is a limitation, but more importantly provides a very rare opportunity for a fresh graduate to learn so much, and to grow as a professional and a leader, in such a short period of time.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Communicate clearly and succinctly: Try and keep your CV and cover letter to one page each. Keep the reader engaged but do not stretch the truth. During the interview, never be afraid to take a few seconds to gather your thoughts before answering the questions.
  • Do your research: We will be impressed by an applicant who has done their due diligence on the real estate sector, our division, Morgan Stanley in general, and the history of our team. Try to show this through your cover letter and during the interview.
  • Be yourself: We want to know who you are. Interviews can be intimidating, but keep in mind that it is definitely more of a conversation than an interrogation, so be confident and tell us about yourself.
