About Us

We are the Queensland Department of Education (DoE), a state government department in Australia. We deliver high-quality public education services to nearly 70 per cent of all Queensland school students through two key portfolios – Early Childhood and Education.

We are approximately:

  • 1230 schools
  • 50,000 teachers
  • 543,000 students

The state schooling system

Queensland students starting their education in Prep or 'preparatory year' are age 5 by June 30 in the year they start school. Students move to secondary school in Year 7 and complete their senior phase of learning in Year 12.

As a teacher with the department, a range of teaching environments are available: from one teacher schools through to those with more than 2000 students. You may find yourself teaching single or multi-age classes, or teaching across a cluster of schools. All state schools are coeducational and operate in close partnership with their local communities.

Teaching in Queensland state schools

Teaching with the department provides an opportunity to pursue a fulfilling career while also meeting family, personal and lifestyle needs.
We offer our teachers the following opportunities:

  • Competitive teaching salary
  • Generous superannuation schemes and leave benefits
  • Flexible arrangements
  • Induction and mentoring support
  • Professional development and career progression
  • A diverse range of educational settings and locations
  • Rural, remote and regional incentives
  • To be part of the team who have achieved the most significant gains in national literacy and numeracy benchmarks over the past eight years.

The Department of Education has a range of beginning teacher roles available across the state now and for 2020 and we would like to welcome all teaching graduates to express interest in teaching with us.
