I love the fun atmosphere we have in the office, everyone is keen to help one another and this really eases the tiredness work brought me. Another thing that I love about this job is that I am actually building things not like what I imagined like writing unit tests etc.

What's your job about?

Re-leased is a commercial real estate management service provider and I am currently on a back end management system used by the financial team.

So in the morning, there will be a stand-up meeting and then I will be assigned tasks if I don’t have anything at hand. Usually moves a card to active and assign it to me will be the start. And then create a pull request upon finish. My pr will be reviewed by a senior member and thus be merged into develop branch.

I think it has to be someone with some knowledge about programming to understand what I was working on. Most of the complexity is in the CI/CD part of the development lifecycle.

What's your background?

I grew up in China and came to New Zealand when I was 14. I did my high school at Mcleans College and then I transferred to Hamilton Boys’ High School. Then I moved back to Auckland for university and then got a job in Napier. I found this position in online advertising. Gone through a few interviews and I finally secured the position. I am in my position for approximately one and a half month. Everything here has been spectacular.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

No, I don't think so, one will have to possess the fundamental knowledge of a programmer to do my job. The essential skills are listed below:

  • Git Version Control
  • Good sense of object-oriented programming
  • Software Architecture
  • Design Patterns
  • Testing
  • A mind to write clean code
  • A heart of continuous learning

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I love the fun atmosphere we have in the office, everyone is keen to help one another and this really eases the tiredness work brought me. Another thing that I love about this job is that I am actually building things not like what I imagined like writing unit tests etc. By working on the internal system, I learnt a lot about how the real software industry looks like and about software development itself. People here adopt an agile approach to working, which means everyone is up to date on what everyone else is doing in a small team so that documentation is minimised. I love it because that really ease the burden of having to read and write a lot of documents before coding and it makes receiving help from others so much easier.
