Pros & Cons

  • Opportunity to work on diverse projects. As a young professional entering the industry, the company has a portfolio that allows lots of experience to be gained. Despite the industry of O&G having a lot of uncertainties, the company has exciting projects coming up that can provide a career of work.
  • Ability to interact with employees with different technical profession/specialties to myself. Allows an understanding of how multi-faceted the company is, everyone working together to keep the assets running smoothly. Everyone I have dealt with (whether it be technical questions related to my work scope or general enquiries) has been super helpful and haven't felt like I've doubted myself when asking for help. Work-mode flexibility. Ability to work from home if required, in addition to Flexi-Friday scheme has allowed a comfortable integration into full-time work and general corporate environment.
  • Variety of technical work, and ability to gain experience in different areas.
  • The best thing about working with Santos is that the company provides a great learning environment especially for us the new graduates and offers various training programs to for skill enhancements.
  • Good site experience for graduates.
  • The organisation of data.
  • Lack of clarity and direction.
  • I personally do not find anything worse about working at Santos.
  • Lack of senior mentorship, workload can be overwhelming at times.
  • Being thrown into the deep end can be bit daunting at first but it helps you to develop.

There are clear pathways for whether you want to get into management (team leader, manager, general manager, VP, EVP) or in technical streams (senior engineer, senior staff engineer, principal engineer)

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility
There are many welfare projects that Santos sponsors in PNG and Australia that help to boost local communities. The impacts of these are shared in company news and appear to have a very positive impact on the community.

Culture
Love that everyone is seen as equal and treated fairly. Our opinions are aired out and there is no micromanaging starting from the hierarchy and down.

Diversity

Diversity
There appears to be a reasonable diversity of backgrounds by todays standards in corporate environments. Diversity is welcomed in recruitment but people are not given jobs just because of it. Everyone appears to get the same go at promotions, childcare, maternity leave etc.

Satisfaction

Satisfaction
I find my daily responsibilities to be both intellectually stimulating and demanding. I derive great satisfaction from the tasks assigned to me and appreciate the adequate time provided for their completion.

Management
My direct managers are lovely people and genuinely care for all their staff, particularly the graduates, with an intent on helping graduates learn and progress their skills and abilities so that we can be as autonomous as possible at work. People like Andrew White and Marcia Evans should be commended on their work to make Santos a place where people want to work and not just have to work.

Office Work Environment
Office facilities are great, particularly the end of trip, standing desks, general cleanliness, light/bright space etc. Dress code is relatively informal which I love, it means that people don't have to feel pressured to look a certain way and can turn up to work feeling comfortable. People can use common sense to dress more formally as required e.g. for an important meeting or presentation.

Cognitive and emotional intelligence testing before an interview with a technical assessor and HR representative. I was asked to present a 10-minute presentation on a project I had previously completed, where minor technical questions were asked about the topic afterwards. There were a few general questions about my previous experience, why I was interested in the role, what I bring to the company, and what my favourite course was at university. Be themselves, be confident and honest. Speak up on what they can do and do research on the company first. Why do they want to apply and how will they contribute towards the success of the company.

Pay is very competitive at graduate level and bonuses are great. The gym program Santos offers is great, however it isn't very well communicated and advertised. Share match is good as well.

Training
I have been very happy with the training I have been offered by Santos, most of which was recommended by my leader and colleagues. I was fortunate to travel to Adelaide to complete a week-long course run externally. I have enjoyed completing the LEAP courses as well. How late Petroskills came out was a bit disappointing, but I have been enjoying that nonetheless. I have picked up lots of new technical skills, skills using different software, data analysis, decision making, economics modelling and presentation skills.

Company has been flexible with work hours, with the Flexi-Friday (9-day fortnight) being a great initiative to be in place.

Sustainability
Many people would criticise an oil and gas companies efforts at sustainability, but Santos is working to provide extensive carbon capture and storage facilities to help Australia reach its net zero goal in line with the Paris agreement. Our environmental department also does a great job on day-to-day monitoring of land rights and environmental safety of operations.
