Being able to get involved with physical construction and macro-management of such a large project is something I’m grateful for.

What's your job about?

I’m currently employed by TSA Management, who provide consultancy project management and advisory services to both public and private clients. My area of responsibility falls under contract administration and consultant management.

On a standard workday I arrive to race for my desired ‘hot desk’ to beat the crowd and start my morning with a little win. Due to a recent uptake in new staff, collaboration is high in the office so strategic seating is of high necessity.

I’m currently working on the Tweed Valley Hospital Project for Health Infrastructure NSW with several TSA staff forming our Tweed Team. With multiple contracts taking place on our site, including the main hospital build, main entry road widening, multi-deck carpark and a nearby intersection upgrade, there’s always something productive to be done. At this point in time I am preparing the intersection upgrade tender documentation, detailing scope of works, deliverables and government contract requirements. An overview of these documents with ongoing input from multiple Tweed Team members will occupy my morning.

What's your background?

I discovered this job opportunity through QUT’s careers portal. Funnily enough, there was no mention of ‘Project Management’ being a career outcome of my degree up until this moment. With this being my first application for a graduate position, nerves and uncertainty were prevalent. After completing a number of interviews I was lucky enough to be awarded the position of ‘Graduate Project Manager’ with TSA Management while completing the final semester of my degree and required work experience.

I’ve now been working for TSA for 4 months and my personal growth has never developed at a higher rate. With numerous changes kicking off 2021 such as graduating university, starting full-time work, moving out and changing sporting codes from Rugby Union to AFL, my life has taken quite a turn to say the least.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Of course. There is an extensive range of degrees and experience in the TSA office. With Engineers, Construction Managers and long-term Tradesmen occupying positions ranging from Graduates to Directors. The familiar characteristics throughout these positions are (although as cliché and overused as they are) personable, committed, realistic and professional. I’ll leave you to read over TSA’s values, however I believe the Brisbane office is underpinned by the listed attributes above, creating a fun, productive and inclusive environment.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Although my time on site has been limited due to distance, the learning curve from walking the site with experienced managers and discussing building components and methodology is unmatched. Being able to get involved with physical construction and macro-management of such a large project is something I’m grateful for.

What are the limitations of your job?

The limitations of this role stems from prior experience and attitude. I found the gap from study to working very confronting however it’s nothing you can’t overcome with some perseverance. Your rate of learning and accountability is so high that by the end of the day you’re exhausted from having new tasks thrown at you for completion, so I’ve found that creating downtime after work is essential. Finally, your learning is limited by your commitment and honesty, not to other people but yourself. Be honest with what you’ll actually enjoy, your commitment and effort will reflect your enjoyment.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Get the result you desire but most of your learning will be done after graduation.
  • Your individuality and personality will help you get a job just as much as your grades.
  • Start networking with people in your classes. You’re all graduating at the same time so this may pay dividends in the future.
