The origin of this company can be traced to the early 20th century. In 1919, Walter Owen Bentley established Bentley Motors Limited. Later that year, he displayed a car chassis at the London Motor Show. In December, the chassis had an operational engine. Bentley started making its first cars in 1920, and by 1921, they were ready to be released to the public. The remarkable durability of the first Bentley cars received critical acclaim, and they brought prominence to the company. In 1931, Rolls Royce took control of Bentley's assets and created a subsidiary.

In 1998, Volkswagen took over ownership of Bentley's assets from Rolls Royce. Shortly after taking over, Volkswagen spent £500 million to renovate the Crewe factory and enhance its production capacity. In 2002, Bentley gifted Her Majesty an official state limousine to celebrate her 50th year on the throne. Bentley, already established as a trusted manufacturer of premium cars, experienced significant financial success due to massive car sales. In early 2020, Bentley halted its production of vehicles because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Later that year, the company announced that it intended to manufacture and sell electric cars by 2030.
