The Hyundai Story

The first car that Hyundai ever manufactured was Cortina, and it was released with the help of Ford Motor Company in 1968. It was with the manufacturing of the model Pony by Hyundai in 1984 that was partly responsible for the success of Hyundai. A year after this, the millionth Hyundai car was sold. While Hyundai has been selling automobiles across the world since the 1970s, it was only in 1998 that they began to work on their brand image to appear as a car manufacturer of global standards. As part of branding, Hyundai has also been one of the worldwide official sponsors of the FIFA World Cup in 2004. Today, Hyundai has manufacturing plants in North America, the Czech Republic, China, Russia, Turkey, and India and R&D centres in Europe, Asia, North America and the Pacific Rim.

The recruitment process

Aspiring employees should apply online or through university campuses. Candidates can also apply through the route of an employee referral. Potential employees hear back from Hyundai within one to two weeks, but you should be prepared for it to take longer as well. Unfortunately, due to the high number of applications, only shortlisted candidates are contacted.

The CV is the first document that Hyundai uses to filter applicants. Candidates should be prepared to take a written online test gauging the applicant’s aptitude and skill, although this test is mostly relevant to engineering and science roles. If candidates clear this test, they would be expected to take 3-4 interviews with field engineers, management, and HR. While the interviews are not stressful or difficult, candidates are expected to be confident, make intelligent guesses, and be open to learning. Additionally, a lot of importance is given to candidates being proficient with English, considering Hyundai has a global presence. Therefore, candidates are advised to work on their speaking and listening skills in English, especially if they are not native speakers.

For management positions, it is more likely that applicants would have to undergo many interviews; there may be as many as six interviews before the job offer. These interviews generally test the candidate’s knowledge about the automotive industry in Korea and the world. The questions would range from work ethics, leadership values, challenges, and achievements during the previous work experience of the candidate.

Career prospects

Hyundai has a brand image and manufacturing presence across the world. Therefore, there is a promise that alumni of Hyundai end up with valuable skills and experience after working there. As part of the Hyundai Motor Group University, employees are provided with opportunities for training, seminars, and workshops to expand their skills. The purpose of this program is to better the human resources of the company. The skills gained during the employee’s time prepares them to work in any global corporation, particularly in the automobile manufacturing sector.

Former employees may switch to companies working in leading companies in the automotive sector like Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, LG Chem, Renault Samsung Motors, and Hyundai MOBIS.

Remuneration

Hyundai pays according to or slightly higher than the industry standard. Engineers may earn anywhere between ₩5,50,00,000-₩7,50,00,000 annually. This salary may be as high as ₩9,00,00,000 for senior engineers. Junior managers start earning at around ₩6,00,00,000, but senior managers may earn up to ₩9,00,00,000 annually. This salary may be slightly low for senior-level management, considering that it would require a few years of experience to get promoted to this level.

The culture

Hyundai expects employees to be quick, efficient, and that they will adhere to strict deadlines. Work can be stressful, in spite of the fact that the offices provide employees with many benefits and perks. Employees get a lot of opportunities to learn and grow at Hyundai, and this would be a good place to start for freshers who are looking for a challenging environment. Hyundai may not be the best place to work for employees who have families and need to prioritise work-life balance. Although the job can be very demanding, some employees may also find that management is slow, bureaucratic, and hierarchical. It also needs to be mentioned that non-Koreans find that the culture can be somewhat disadvantageous to them, as Koreans are given preference according to some employees. That said, there is a lot to learn for employees who approach the job with an open-mind and focussed attention.

Social contributions

Since Hyundai has a global presence in both manufacturing and R&D, they also have their corporate social responsibility work across continents. In the Pacific Rim, they have various programs to give back to the communities around them. For instance, Hyundai ran a vehicle donation program where they donated over 544 vehicles and 1113 engines for experimental purposes.

‘Looking for Three-Leaved Clovers’ is a project to aid children who lost their parents in traffic accidents; the project explores education and career opportunities.

The H-Social Creator is an incubator where college students come up with ideas to solve social issues and receive a platform to give real shape to these ideas. Many other projects that Hyundai runs also deal with cultural and artistic curation in various countries.

The vibe of the place

A fast and stressful workplace which can prove challenging for employees. Many opportunities for employees to acquire new skills and work in a global environment.
