Brief History of UPS

UPS has a long and rich history that goes all the way to the early 20th century. In 1907, James Casey and Claude Ryan established the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington. It began operations as a package deliverer to various retail stores and executed a special mail delivery service for the U.S. Post Office, which was its most prominent client at the time. The firm purchased a Ford vehicle to run its deliveries six years after its inception. In 1922, the firm divested into common carrier service. Seven years later, it started parcel delivery through private airlines.

In 1975, the company moved its headquarters to Greenwich, Connecticut. That same year, it established its first foreign operation in Canada. A decade later, it launched its Air Service. In 1992, the firm acquired two companies and was renamed UPS Supply Chain Solutions. Three years later, the company acquired SonicAir to compete favorably with Choice Logistics. In 2001, it acquired Mail Boxes Etc, Inc. Three years later, UPS purchased Menlo Worldwide Forwarding to divest into Heavy Freight operations. In 2012, the company announced its intention to acquire TNT Express. In late 2019, the Federal Aviation Administration approved UPS’ drone service. In early 2021, the company announced its intention to sell its Freight business to TFI International.
